The Wheatsheaf pub based in Writtle, near Chelmsford in Essex provides a warm welcome to all.

A long standing part of the Writtle community, this Gray & Sons pub is now under the careful eye of Landlord Matt Hitchcock. Matt himself is a long standing resident of Writtle and an active member of the village with the many music festivals and fayres that occur across the Summer months which always require a dedicated team of locals to make things run smoothly.

Serving a great selection of alternating Real Ales and cooking some great traditional pub fayre, The Wheatsheaf provides a traditional and cosy retreat away from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

The Wheatsheaf is a popular choice for locals throughout the year where you can find friendship, lively debate and even the odd game of dominoes (be careful who you challenge – some of our customers are pretty hard to beat).

Serving food and beer since 1866 The Wheatsheaf, looks forward to your custom and sits proudly as a hub of the community of Writtle.

Our Food

Enjoy delicious home cooked & locally sourced food, freshly prepared in our kitchen and cooked with plenty of love.

What's On

Whilst we are enduring the Corona Virus we are in the unfortunate position of limiting what types of events we can hold.

Usually The Wheatsheaf has a busy calendar with music, pub games along with close involvement with the community events held in Writtle itself.

Let’s hope we can all get back to having more fun soon but in the meantime we owe it to all our customers to keep them and our staff as safe as possible

Our Beer

As a Gray’s pub we have a reputation for serving a great selection of Cask Ales.

We have been on the CAMRA “Recommended” listing for several years having been awarded this status again for 2020. We have also been invited to join the Timothy Taylor “Champions Club” in recognition of the condition of our Ales.
The Real Ale is the heartbeat of The Wheatsheaf, we have regular favourites and guest ales to tickle the taste buds.
